Other Options for Dealing with Tax Problems

The IRS offers a few different options for individuals who are not able to pay taxes that they owe. Options available to you largely depends on your financial situation. The Internal Revenue Service requires an examination of your income and assets to qualify for these programs.
  • Offers in Compromise. Offers in compromise allow a taxpayer to settle their tax liability for less than the full amount owed. The IRS will generally only approve an offer when the offered by the taxpayer represents the most the most the IRS can expect to collect within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Payment Agreements

  • Currently Not Collectible Status. Currently not collectible status is when the IRS agrees to stop the collection process. The IRS will usually only approve Currently Not Collectible Status when the taxpayer's income and assets would not allow any payment. Taxpayers need to understand that while the IRS stops trying to collect the taxes owed, interest continues to accrue on the full amount owed.
